Prior to this effort, PayPal’s array of internal products and tools resembled a quirky collection of heirlooms, each with its own story but lacking cohesion. Our quest was not just to spruce up this eclectic mix but to weave them into a vibrant tapestry of engaging, powerful products. We aspired to craft experiences that users could reliably predict and enjoy, regardless of the product’s custodian or its intended use.
I led a team of talented designers and engineers to create a design system and approach to producing world class B2B products in a fast paced environment with very limited resources. Embracing our roles as the unsung heroes of customer satisfaction, the Technology Platforms Experience (TPX) team set sail on a noble adventure. Our compass pointed towards creating a unified design system that would serve as the blueprint for our diverse suite of products and applications.
This epic journey was guided by a series of lofty ambitions:
- We looked back on our mission to ensure every pixel and interaction across our vast product landscape sang in perfect harmony, leaving no note out of place.
- We meticulously curated a collection of common elements, like a band of musicians coming together, ensuring their seamless integration across all TPX creations.
- We masterfully orchestrated the implementation of our design system, aiming for each user encounter to unfold with the grace and fluidity of a well-rehearsed symphony.
- We built a bustling marketplace of ideas, a central hub where the TPX virtuosos could collaborate, crafting innovative tools and features for our entire portfolio.
- We anchored our design system in a proven framework and a library of UI controls as timeless as the classics, guaranteeing a brisk tempo in execution and minimal deviation from our visionary compositions to the live performance.
In embracing these objectives with a light heart, we sought to transform the user experience into an opus that would resonate with warmth and familiarity, ensuring every interaction with our products felt like a delightful encore. The Feedback:
Larry and I worked together on enterprise Tech Insights reporting platform at PayPal.
Larry demonstrated & taught our team how to conduct user experience research & develop user personas to better understand the needs of our target audience prioritize the most impactful new features and fixes for our reporting platform.
Larry designed the UI for several key executive level reports and the platform itself which helped users find key information they needed fast. His beautiful designs became the gold standard and were used for over 100 reports on the platform to date.
It was a pleasure working with Larry and highly recommend him for UIX roles.
Larry joined PayPal almost seven years ago and was the user experience design expert for the products that we created in our Site Reliability and Cloud Engineering organization. Larry is incredibly customer focused, made our user experiences beautiful, and was always looking for ways to improve our products. His implementation choices made it so that we could rapidly iterate on our user experiences, and he consistently brought forth new ideas and technology. We were very fortunate to have Larry help establish our customer-focused culture in the early days of our organization.
Larry and I worked together on a few applications together during our time at PayPal. Larry was the lonely designer in our area - but nevertheless a great partner. It is very clear that Larry cares about the customer - and challenges the team to think through thoroughly in that regard. Apart from the number of applications he helped craft for the organization, Larry set a path strategically for designing of customer-oriented workflows for the future. Larry is super passionate about design and is an awesome partner for engineering and product.
